Tips for Creating a Successful Morning Routine

Is it even possible for a mompreneur to have a successful morning routine?

I’m just not a morning person.”

“I could never wake up that early.”

“I need as much sleep as I can possibly get.”

These are the sorts of things I hear from people when they find out I am up between 430am and 630am nearly every morning. They are also the sorts of things I said to my coach who introduced me to the world of morning routines before I jumped on the bandwagon. And my 180 on early mornings and the results I’ve seen from others in my community who finally have the time for focused work, self-care or just a little quiet alone time are exactly why we are talking “Tips for a Successful Morning Routine” on this week’s episode.

Look, I know early mornings aren’t for everyone. But just like anything else in your business or mom life from Facebook Groups to chore charts, how will you know if it will work if you won’t try it? I feel like sometimes we are more comfortable complaining that we don’t have the time we need to write a blog post in quiet or take a shower without heads peeking in rather than make a simple shift that can allow us to create the time we need. That is exactly what I did.

My first business coach was a huge fan of morning routines. and as she would listen to me complain week in and week out about not having the time to build my business and spend time on myself, she would gently suggest it was time to set the alarm clock a little earlier. Eventually, I relented. If only to prove her wrong. There was no way this night owl, mom of toddlers was ever going to be able to wake up any earlier than absolutely necessary to get my kids wrangled and out the door to preschool before I started my day of appointments. I agreed to wake a half-hour earlier until our next meeting in a month.

Within a week I was hooked. By the time our appointment rolled around, I was waking an hour earlier. I had found the magical time I didn’t think was possible. And I want to help you find it too.

Why Start a Morning Routine

How would it feel for you to start your day, your way? Instead of leading with hustling, bustling, and feeling behind…You could start with feeling accomplished. Nurtured. Awake. Fulfilled. And don’t you think everything that comes after that kind of morning is just going to be better?

A successful morning routine is a combination of setting your alarm along with having a plan for how you’ll spend your time. And of course, putting the phone down, shutting down Netflix while getting your booty to bed a little earlier.

A morning routine gives you dedicated time when the world is quiet to focus. To breathe. To enjoy the silence before the chaos. Rather than trying to focus on creating social media content or workout with one child yelling in the other room and the other strapped to your left leg.

And as I said in the intro, I get that you don’t think you’re a morning person. But how about this quote from Amy Landino’s book “Good Morning, Good Life”

Do you want to be a life person? Do you want to have time for what you enjoy? To build the business of your dreams? To take the course your bought or start the day with a clear sink? Creating a morning routine that allows you to fulfill your desires can make you a life person, even if you’re not a morning person at your core.

As you dive into your morning routine, you’ll notice the rest of your day feels less stressful. You’re accomplishing more around your house or in your business because of the focused time you’re spending first thing in the day. You’ll actually have time for some stress-relieving activities like working out, reading a book, or taking a shower and getting yourself ready without feeling rushed. In time, you will notice that you now control your daily schedule rather than your schedule controlling you.

Creating a morning routine also helps set the tone for the entire day. You can start feeling accomplished and fulfilled rather than frazzled, stressed, or stuck in an endless loop of being behind.

And picture a school morning where you’ve woken up and worked out, scheduled some social media posts, and/or finished folding the laundry BEFORE the kids wake. Now you can focus on making sure they have what they need for their school day and, dare I say it, sit down to drink your coffee with them while they eat breakfast because you are feeling like you’ve already crossed items off your to-do list before they even work up. Can you see it?

Steps to Creating a Successful Morning Routine

You deserve to start your day your way. You are worthy of time to focus on your needs. And finding that time can be easier than you think…if you can just get past the little alarm clock part. I’ve got 5 steps that I share with my community when they are looking to create or reinvest in a morning routine.

  1. Know Your Why…as with so many parts a pieces of your business or lives in general, knowing WHY you are trying a new habit or the benefit it will have when you stick with it goes a long way to ensure your success. Why is waking up earlier important for you as a mom? As a business owner? As a household manager? How can making this shift improve the quality of life for you? Your family? Or your clients?
  2. Get to Bed…Once you are super clear on why you want this time in the morning, you got to get to bed. And I realize everyone’s bed situation is different based on your kids’ ages, your sleeping situation, even the size of your house. But even if you aren’t waking up at the crack of dawn, preparing your body to sleep and fall asleep faster is an important skill for mompreneurs. Way back on Episode 13 of the podcast, I talked about 6 Ways to Get to Bed Earlier to Wake Up Earlier that covers everything from bedtime alarms to shutting down screens to creating a bedtime routine you actually look forward to. (You can check out 6 Ways to Get to Bed Earlier to Wake Up Earlier here) But the big takeaway is that you need to do whatever it takes to get yourself to bed earlier if you want to successfully wake up earlier.
  3. Set Your Alarm Earlier…And now that you’re getting yourself to sleep earlier, it is time to wake up earlier. I highly recommend starting slow. Set your alarm 15-30 minutes earlier to start. Even 10 minutes is better than nothing…especially if you have a purpose for you time (which we will talk about in our next step). Also, think about your alarm style. If a blaring beep isn’t doing it for you, try waking to music. Or using an alarm clock that uses light versus sound. I recently switched over to a clock like this and I have to say waking to light and chirping birds is much more pleasant than uh-uh-uh.
  4. Plan What to Do…And once you’re up and raring to go, it’s best to have a plan for your sacred time. Think about what you’d like to do the night before. Or create a morning ritual. Think about the tasks or activities you consider important but that feel like you don’t have time for or can’t devote the time you need to. I like to suggest something for yourself, something for your home, and something for your work if you have time. For instance, you jump on the treadmill for 15 minutes, start a load of laundry, and review your priority tasks for the day. Self, home, business…check, check, check. And all of that could be done in around 30-45 minutes.
  5. Plan for Failure…And my final step in creating a successful morning routine is to plan to fail. Because it is going to happen. Vacation. The holidays. A sick kid. A sick you. And perhaps you just need a bit more sleep one day which turns into a week of snoozing. It can happen. And it’s ok. What’s important is to reflect on how you got off track and reinvest in why it was you wanted to start your morning routine in the first place. Then continue with what was working for you and take this chance to drop anything that wasn’t. Remember “if a plan doesn’t work, change the plan, not the goal.” If the goal is to wake up earlier to have more time for you or focused work or maintaining your home, but you can’t wake up early when you got to bed at 1130pm every time, perhaps the plan needs a zhuzh. You can use a stopping strategy to help preplan for any backsliding you encounter. Fill in the blank…If I __________, I will _________. If I hit turn off my alarm 2 days in a row, I will contact a friend to text me to make sure I’m up on the third day.Or if I find myself going to bed later which makes it harder to wake up early, I will create time in the middle of my day to watch my favorite show rather than staying up too late. Think about how you can get back on the horse if you happen to fall off.

And there you have my 5 steps to help you, yes you, even the most non-morning person, create a successful morning routine. Know why it is you want or need to wake up earlier. Create a plan to get yourself to bed earlier. Start setting your alarm a little earlier. Have a plan for how your will spend your new found time nurturing yourself, focusing on your business, or maintaining your household. And finally, know that it is ok if you get off track. Life happens. And mom life happens even more. But deciding now how you will reinvest will help you get back on track quicker and easier.

How to Decide What to Do When You Work

Ever sit down to work on your carefully curated list of tasks to-do that someone, somewhere said you “need” to do and feel completely overwhelmed by it all? Then today’s episode is for you! Let’s decide what to do for you when you work.

The topic of deciding what to do because it comes up over and over in my community. Figuring out what to do and then doing those things can really zap your energy as an entrepreneur. Add to that the duties you have as a mom and around your home and it’s no wonder this feels so daunting. But it doesn’t have to. And today I am going to share a few simple questions that will help you narrow that list down to your priority tasks when you are feeling confused, indecisive, or overwhelmed. 

Ugh….What Do I Do???

Staring at a to-do list of 10, 20, 30, or more tasks can feel completely overwhelming…even to the most productive go-getter. And whenever you have a large quantity of anything…whether it’s tasks on your to-do list or clothes in your closet…making a decision becomes even harder. Today we are solving the problem of knowing what to focus on NOW from your to-do list in order to get the right things done, work efficiently, and save time and energy. 

The mompreneurs who make a regular practice of evaluating the tasks and carving out time for the ones that are urgent and important often feel less stress. They can do more in less time because the tasks they focus on make a difference. And many of those tasks we thought we needed to do don’t need completed. All it takes is a little evaluation and prioritization. 

Feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list or confused about what to do? It’s often because you pick what to do willy nilly, rather than focusing time and energy on tasks that truly make an impact. Many times you choose a task because you like to do it or because it is easy. But I’m here to tell you…those are often not the tasks that will move the needle in helping you grow your community, work more efficiently, see more results or, most importantly, make more money. As busy mompreneurs pulled in 127 different directions, you have to stop wasting time on low-value tasks. 

But what are those low-value tasks? How do you even know what is a waste and what is productive? You have so many voices in your ear, mine included, telling you what you should and should not do. The fact is, only you know your priorities based on your goals and your values. But the more you practice prioritizing what’s on your list based on those goals and values, the easier it becomes to see exactly what you need to do when you sit down to work. Or what to do with your free time. When you manage to carve out that 3 minutes and 48 seconds. 

How You Benefit When You Decide What to Do

When you use the simple questions I’m sharing today to prioritize your to-do list, you focus on tasks that matter. You reduce feelings of overwhelm and stress because you can focus time and energy on only the tasks produce results. And you often reduce your workload because you can give up the tasks that don’t truly align with your goals or your values. 

On a daily basis, you will feel confident that what you are doing will benefit of your business, your self, or your family because those tasks are directly aligned with your goals or your values. 

And you aren’t the only person who benefits from a less stressed, less overwhelmed business owning mom. Your family will see more of you because you can accomplish more in less time. And you can show up less distracted or stressed at mealtimes or sporting events because you know the work you’ve done (and left behind) made an impact.  

Steps to Decide What to Do When You Work

So how can you arrive at this glorious place where can decide what to do, your tasks align, your to-do list shrinks, and you can walk away from work at the end of the day feeling accomplished? It’s easier than you might think. 

First, let’s take a second to review the difference between your urgent and important tasks. I did a deep dive on this topic in episode 38 titled “The Difference between Urgent and Important. And Why It Matters” back in November of 2020. But in a nutshell…your urgent tasks require immediate action. Your important tasks aid in reaching your long term goals. And your daily to-do list will contain a combination of both urgent and important tasks.  

Which leads us to my four, simple TRIM Your To-Do list questions. I developed these questions based on prioritizing what is urgent and important to my clients. Not what this guru said you have to do in some workshop or what that IG post said you need to do in order to (fill in the blank). These questions help you decide what to do based on the goals you’ve set for your business and personal life. Along with the values you hold for yourself and your family. 

  1. Is the task time sensitive? As in does it have a due date. And, importantly, is that due date approaching. If the answer is yes, the task is a priority and you should complete it asap. If the due date is in the future, schedule time to complete the task closer to the due date. These time sensitive tasks fall under the urgent category when it comes to prioritizing your to-do list. 
  1. Is the task required to move on to the next step? This would be a task like sending a questionnaire to a new potential client so you can schedule a sales call. Uploading new pictures to your website for your online shop so you can add those new seasonal products. Creating an opt-in so you can start collecting email addresses. If completing this task means you move on to a new, necessary phase of tasks directly related to your goals and your success, then those tasks are priorities and must be done. 
  1. Does the task make an impact positively or negatively? This category of tasks includes but is not limited to: scheduling a doctor’s appointment, going to your child’s choir concert, working out, self-care, showing up on social media if that is where you market your business, family dinner, scheduling client calls, taking an online course, and so on. Many of the tasks that make an impact will fall into the important category. They contribute to your long term goals and align with your values. And they are often overlooked or afterthoughts. Or we just try to squeeze them in rather than treating them as a priority. That is also why we often feel extra stress or overwhelm because we aren’t making time for these important tasks that make an impact. 
  1. Will the task make me money or cost me money? Remember…you are in business. Businesses make money. Otherwise it is a hobby. I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve talked with mompreneurs who will spin their wheels for hours planning marketing content or writing blog posts and ignore the tasks on their to-do list that can actually result in sales. Making money is a priority as a business. And your task list should reflect that. Likewise, if you avoid tasks like invoicing clients or paying bills, that avoidance is costing you money.  

Your action step to decide what to do when you work is to prioritize your to-do list. Ask yourself these questions about the tasks on your list…Is this time-sensitive? Is it required for me to move to the next step? Will it make an impact positively or negatively? Will it make me money or cost me money? If the answer is “yes” to one or more of those questions, it is a priority and needs your precious time and focus first. Time Sensitive. Required. Impact-Driven. Or Money Related. That’s the TRIM in TRIM your To-Do List.
