You Need a Plan (Not Luck) for a Successful Business

With tomorrow being St. Patrick’s Day I wanted to talk a little bit about luck. Well, actually, why you need a plan. The idea for this episode popped into my head recently when I dropped some food off for a friend who was ill. She asked how things were going with working from home and homeschooling the kids. I honestly answered her that they were going well. My boys were thriving with more one-on-one attention in their schoolwork and we had really found a good routine to juggle work and school. Her response was “well, you’re lucky. So many people aren’t as lucky as you.”

I didn’t think much about it until I was driving home. It dawned on me I’m not lucky. Luck implies that I wasn’t involved with the success I was experiencing. The fact is, I made my success. I work hard for this. I wake up early nearly every morning to maintain this. It isn’t LUCK that’s helped me maintain a positive attitude and find success in my juggle struggle. It’s a good plan. And we’re going to talk about why you need a plan to on today’s episode.

Why You Need a Plan

Taking the time to create a plan for your day, your week, and your quarter when it comes to your business help you know exactly what you need to work on when. I don’t know about you, but with all the balls I have in the air, decision fatigue is a regular occurrence. And I work much better when I don’t have to decide, I just have to do.

If you can set aside time on a regular basis to create tasks based on your current goals then schedule times to work on those specific tasks, you will not only see more progress on your goals. You will start to make better use of your time and eliminate tasks that waste your time or are not aligned with your goals.

Up until now, you might have been doing all the things…you do what this guru over there says. And then you’re sprinkling in what you learned from a workshop here. Plua a dash of what’s working for someone you saw on Instagram there.

I’ve been where you are. It’s kinda maddening really. You feel like you are working so hard and doing so much but NOTHING seems to be yielding the results you feel like you deserve from your efforts. But the fact is, the random tasks you are doing aren’t aligned with your goals directly. Your social media posts, YouTube videos, and email newsletters are just happening without a direct purpose related to the financial and community-building goals your set.

Benefits of Creating a Plan

When you take time to create a plan, you focus on the tasks that actually move the needle and align with your goals. And in turn, you see the results in your community growth and your bank account.

Not to mention, you will know what you need to work on when you sit down every day rather than recreating the wheel on a regular basis. And you’ll make better use of that time you put it because it is going towards an aligned task. And all those spaghetti throwing tasks you were doing before because “someone” told you to do it. They can hit the road. No more wasted work time.

And you aren’t the only one who benefits from a solid plan…when you can make more of the time you work, you can work less. Less work means more time for the ones you love. When the tasks you focus on yield results because they are aligned, you are less stressed and able to stay present when you are with your family, with your spouse or with your friends. That in turn will help you relax and refresh so you can show up better for the work you do during your work how. See how nicely a plan fits into a healthy work cycle?

Where to Start When You Need a Plan

So where do you even start when it comes to creating a quarterly, weekly, or even daily plan? Start with your goals. How many new clients would you like to get this month or quarter? What would you like to sell more of from your shop? How many courses do you need to sell to reach your goal?

Once you know what you would like to do, think about how you will do it. What works best for you? Do you sell best in person? On social media? Through email? Look at your past success and brainstorm how you can continue to build on those accomplishments. You don’t need to add something new…look at expanding what you already do.

And as you create a list of the tasks that brought you previous success and how you can expand on that, those ideas are what will become your focused tasks on your daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly schedule. Those are the thing you MUST do consistently and regularly. You can let go of the other stuff or put them on the backburner. But remember, when you lean into what is working, you can work less and yield better results.

Set your goals. Brainstorm the steps it takes to reach those goals. Schedule those steps as your daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. Anything else you have time to do is just gravy. But for now, focus on the tasks that make an impact.  

Remember, taking time to create a plan helps you know what to do when. Your plan creates a task list aligned with your goals. With actions that move the needle on selling more and growing your community. And by creating a plan you will be able to make better use of your work time while eliminating actions that don’t align with your goals or may be wasting your precious time.

Family Fun Tip

The first day of Spring or the Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere is this Saturday, March 20th. I wanted to give you some simple ways you could celebrate the season of rebirth and renewal with your family. Because we could all use a little renewal right now…am I right?

You could:

  • Take a hike on a new or favorite trail.
  • Start some seeds for a kitchen garden or backyard flower garden.
  • Search out some YouTube videos on the seasons to see how the rotation of the Earth around the sun affects the hemispheres differently and what the heck an equinox even is.
  • Visit your local library for books on the life cycle of flowers and plants, baby animals, or Spring in general.
  • Take some time to be present outside. Enjoy the thaw. Enjoy the pre-mosquito outdoors with your family and without your phone. Just be. Outside.

How to Determine Your Impact Driven Tasks

What the heck am I even talking about? Impact driven tasks? Well, knowing and focusing your energy on your Impact Driven Tasks (aka IDTs) will make the most of the time and effort you put into working on and in your business. It will help you know what to work on when. It will help you determine what you can let go of. And it will help you work less.

Entrepreneurs who recognize and focus on the tasks that will make an impact on their bottom line, grow their community, or create more buzz around their zone of genius will reap the benefits of impact driven tasks. And it’s not just recognizing your IDTs but making them a priority. These are the tasks that you tackle first on your daily to-do list, no matter how much you hate them.

Why Impact Driven Tasks?

Focusing on IDTs is like super-charging your to-do list. Sure, you may have a long list of things you think you need to do. Maybe someone somewhere at some time told you you need to be doing for your business. But do those tasks actually make an impact on your business?

And if you’re thinking “why would I want to add any more to my to-do list. I’m getting results so why would I want to spend more time analyzing and planning.”

Because it means that every effort you make will have a greater effect. It means that you’ll earn a great ROI for the time dollars you invest in growing your business. Not to mention you’ll make more actual dollars in your bank account.

Gone will be the days of trying to figure out what to do first because you will know that those Impact Driven Tasks for the day MUST come first because those are the tasks that will make you money, grow you community, and establish your authority.

And your new found focus can help you to work less but grow more. Meaning more time for the people you love and money to spend doing the things you love with them.

How to Determine Your Impact Driven Tasks

I can hear you out there saying “sign me up. Help me figure out my IDTs!” And that is exactly what we are going to do right now. And it’s so simple yet so effective.

When you make your list of what you will do for your business today or this week, here is how to determine if you task is an Impact Driven Task…

  1. Does it make you money? Any tasks that are directly in line with the money-making parts of your business is an IDT. Because it makes you money…which is the point of your business. For example, sending an email to your community. Creating a sales page. Making an Instagram story about a product you sell…these are all impact driven tasks. Because they can make you money.
  2. Does it help you build your community? It’s kind of hard to sell what you do if you don’t have anyone to talk to. That’s why building your community is so important and impact driven. For instance, you could recording a podcast interview for an aligned podcast. Or asking an answering questions during a FB live. Or reaching out to your community on Instagram through Dms just to say “hi” and “welcome”. Because the action is bringing people in and nurturing them, it is impact driven.
  3. Does it establish your expertise? People want to buy from qualified experts. So when you aren’t spending time directly soliciting sales or nurturing those in your community, you need to focus on actions that make you the go-to person in your field. Actions like writing a blog post or article for online publication. Recording your own podcast addressing topics in your field of expertise. Or writing thoughtful social media posts with valuable information aligned with your zone of genius. If I can read your blog post, hear your podcast, or see your social media post and think “that mama knows what she is talking about”, that is an impact driven task.

When your daily to-do list start with impact driven tasks, you will spend time moving forward and growing your business versus spinning your wheels. Impact driven tasks are the ‘”why” behind every business.

Why you do what you do…to make money, to build a community and to become an expert in your field. When you look at what you will do today, ask yourself “Will this task make me money? Will it build my community” Will it showcase my expertise?” When you can answer “yes” to one of those questions, do that task first. Every. Single. Day.

When you focus your time, energy, and effort on your IDTs, you will see greater growth, more sales, and find you can let other less impactful tasks go…freeing up that time and energy for your family and yourself.

Family Fun Tip

Who wants to have a “YES Day”? If you aren’t familiar with the book Yes Day by Amy Rosenthal-Krause and Tom Lichtenheld. Or if you’re not following Jennifer Garner on IG, you might be wondering what “Yes Day” is. In a nutshell, it is a day where you say “yes” to the requests of your kids.

Cake for breakfast? Yes.

Building a pillow fort in the living room? Yes.

That messy science experiment they’ve been begging you to do? Yes.

They can ask for what they want, within the boundaries you establish, and the answer is “yes” for that day. “Yes Day” isn’t about telling your kids it’s ok to break rules (that’s why you establish clear boundaries ahead of time). Or telling them eating candy 3 meals a day is ok. It’s about spending time doing what THEY choose. Empowering their decisions and ideas.

If a “Yes Day” sounds fun to you, hears how you prepare…pick a day that is not a school day or a day without regularly scheduled activities. You’ll also want to establish your boundaries…how far you will travel, if at all. How much money you will spend. No activities that are harmful to anyone or destructive to property. You can even solicit some requests in advance so you can prepare any food, crafts, or other activities your kids have in mind. Remember, this isn’t about last minute trips to Disney or buying a Playstation 5. It’s about empowering your kid, just for a day.

6 Ways Running Your Business is Like Baking Sourdough

How in the world is running your business like baking sourdough bread???

You might have gathered that I am a fan of baking. If you follow me on Instagram, you may know that I have a quarantine sourdough starter named Fred. Yes, I jumped on the sourdough bandwagon. And no I’m not ashamed. When I was baking a loaf of bread a few weeks back, I realized that Fred is coming up on his one-year birthday. And I thought back to how many crappy loaves of sourdough my family has suffered through in the past year while I was finding my groove. That is why on this episode we are going to discuss how running your business is like baking sourdough.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that many of the lessons and take aways I have from a year of baking sourdough bread almost weekly can also be applied to starting and growing a business. So I’m going to share six business lessons I’ve learned from baking sourdough bread.

Nuture It At the Beginning

First, you have to nurture your starter at the beginning. When you first create your sourdough starter, you have to spend time nearly every day feeding and nurturing it. It needs flour, fresh water, and a warm place to grow on a daily basis in order to become strong enough to use in a loaf of bread.

The same is true in your business…you have to put a lot of time in at the beginning. You have to give it exactly what it needs at the beginning. This helps the starter get stronger and work for you. You have to spend the time nurturing it and creating a solid base so it can work for you.

Let Parts Go

Another thing you will learn with your sourdough starter is that you need to let some of it go. Unless you are a full-fledged bakery capable of baking dozens of loaves a day, you need to discard some of your starter. This helps it to stay healthy and strong. You might give it to friends or neighbors. But most of the time you just need to toss it in order for the remaining starter to stay strong. The stronger your starter, the better your bread will be.

The same is true of your business. It can be so easy to hold on to all the different places you are marketing or products you are selling because you hate to waste the time you’ve put into developing them. But…your business will be much stronger if you can scale back. If you focus energy on the best of what you do and where you show up.

Plan in Advance

When you finally start baking sourdough bread, you learn you have to plan in advance. Unlike yeast breads, sourdough takes an extended period of time to rise…typically 12-18 hours and sometimes longer. That means, if you want to eat soup and sourdough for dinner tonight, you’re SOL. You have to plan ahead. You have to make time for the steps a day in advance of when you would like to eat it.

The same is true of your business…sure there are certain parts you can slapdash and get done. Want the true, artisan-style sourdough boule experience for your customers? Put some effort and energy into planning ahead. You “knead” to how your plan is going to fit into your marketing and revenue goals. Plan ahead, then enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Learn from Failures

Even the best-laid plans are not successful. And the next lesson from sourdough that you can apply to your business is to learn from your failures. If you try to bake sourdough once, chances are you will not succeed on the first try. There are so many intricacies and variables in sourdough bread. Starters are temperamental and need to be well nurtured to work properly, you’re inexperienced at kneading and shaping your loaf, you forget to add the salt. My loaves have fallen victim to all of these. But I was determined to learn from what I did wrong and try again. Because I believed in the process and I knew it was something I wanted to do.

Bring that passion and drive to your business. If it doesn’t work out right the first time, you can always try again. Most of the time when you see another entrepreneur’s success, it’s because you didn’t see the 20 times they didn’t succeed and went back to the drawing board.

Consult with Experts

Another way you can learn from your failures to succeed is to consult with experts. The number of YouTube videos I have watched on sourdough breadmaking is rivaled only by the number of YouTube videos I have watched on marketing your business. Each time I struggle with a certain aspect of my breadmaking, I search for a video on “how to knead bread” or “why is my sourdough so pale” or “why won’t my sourdough rise when baking”.

And when you are struggling with an aspect of your business that you don’t understand, there are experts out there that can either teach you to do it, or, better yet, do it for you so you don’t have to waste time and energy on something that isn’t in your zone of genius.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

And finally, remember that looks can be deceiving. I have made several terrible looking loaves that tasted just fine despite being an ugly beige carpet color. And on the flip side, I’ve made beautiful loaves that tasted terrible. I mean, there are only 4 ingredients in sourdough…how hard can it be to forget salt and yet, I’ve done it no less than 3 times.

The same can be true when you look at the businesses around you. Whether it’s on social media, in your mastermind, or just what you research on the internet…you see that they want you to see. You may feel your business looks like a hot mess. But what’s on the outside doesn’t matter if you’re helping your ideal client with wins. And that business you’re jealous of on IG may look amazing on the outside while suffering behind the scenes. Don’t hold yourself back because your loaf is ugly…if it tastes good people will want it. And you can always get better the next bake (remember, when we don’t succeed, we learn.)

In conclusion, your business like baking sourdough because you have to nurture it up front. Then it can be strong and work well for you. You have to let parts go so that the main focus can be strong. You need to plan in advance. And learn from your failures and consult experts when you have questions or need help. Finally, remember looks can be deceiving. Just keep focusing on what you are doing and creating the best product you can. Eventually, you will find your rhythm and your tribe.

Family Fun Tip

For today’s Family Fun tip, I want to butter you up because as you’ve learned, you “knead” fun in order to run a successful business. I personally love baking with my boys. Mostly because it is a chance for me to share something I love with them. Even if they don’t grow up to be pastry chefs, I am hoping they will have fond memories of baking sugar cookies during the holidays or birthday cakes with me. Or at least they’ll have fond memories of eating what we made.

So many kitchen skills are about familiarity and comfort in the kitchen so regularly cooking and baking with your kids can help them start to understand how ingredients go together while developing confidence in the kitchen. Some ideas creating treats together might be…making no-bake treats like no-bake cookies or rice cereal treats, having a bake-off to see who can bake the best tasting treat, testing several different recipes for favorites like chocolate chip cookies to decide which is best, or researching a baked good from your family history and baking it together.

Whatever it is that you choose, baking is a very simple, easy, and delicious way for you to create some family fun while teaching life skills and kitchen confidence. I think my greatest strength (and sometimes weakness) is that I love people. Like I genuinely care about people and their business which means I serve with excellence and want them to get incredible results.

I am growing and stretching in my confidence as I level up and in hiring for myself. I was super confident in some of my packages and then my coach saw them and “made “ me level up. That saying, “new level has new devils” is so true.

4. If you were to start your business over today, what piece of advice or lesson learned would you emphasize to yourself? 

I would tell myself to go hard or go home. To not be afraid. I would hire a coach to help sooner in the game. And I would stop doubting myself and my abilities.

5. What is your best advice for balancing business and home life or creating intentional family time? 

Be intentional. My business name reminds me to live an abundant life daily but also abundant in how I see fit.. not what the world tells me it’s supposed to be. Meaning I created this business to provide for my family but also to stop trading time for money. I created it so I could have more time with my family, not be chained to the biz. Always remember your why.

They are all part of today’s first (but not last) “Your Questions Answered” episode. I decided to change things up this week with a little Q & A from my community. I’ve collected your questions from Instagram related to time management, productivity and mindset. I truly believe that if one person speaks up with a question, chances are there are several other people out there feeling the same way or asking the same question. So hopefully we can answer some of your questions today even if it wasn’t a question you submitted.

Time-Saving Apps

First up, Jen @mcraedesign.nc asks…

“Is there an app to schedule stories on Instagram? I’d love a link of time-saving apps too.”

Thank you for that question Jen…and yes, I definitely have some apps that help save time and make you more productive. Before I share those, as I suggest with many things you might add into your routine, make sure you are super clear on WHY you are making this change. It doesn’t have to take weeks of journaling and meditating, but just think for a few minutes about the purpose behind adding this app to your phone or daily routine.

And the reason I suggest this pause is to make sure you aren’t just adding to add. Is this app or new routine going to help you manage your time better or feel more productive at the end of the day? If so, it is definitely worth that time and the effort you will put into utilizing the app. If not, it may be better to refine a system you already have in place. That said, here are some apps that save me time or help me work more productively.

  • Time on Apps – Both Android and Apple offer a way for you to see how much screen time you are using. When I started checking my screen time, I was floored. I honestly didn’t think I was wasting that much time a day mindlessly scrolling. But alas, numbers don’t lie. In addition to seeing how much time you spend staring at your screen, you can actually set limits on certain apps within your phone or tablet settings. Once you’ve used up the time for the day, it will not allow you to open that app again until the following day. While not apps per se, I found these tools so helpful in providing a check on my screen time, which in turn led to me reallocating that time to family or work priorities.

  • Focus To-Do – This app helps with the Pomodoro technique…which in a nutshell is working in bursts of 25 minutes with a short 5-minute break. This app times the Pomodoros for you and allows you to adjust your work and break time as needed. For me, this is helpful because if I look at my timer and it says I have 15 minutes left I think “ok, I can keep this up for 15 more minutes”.

  • Instacart – My next app for saving you time is Instacart. Or any sort of grocery ordering app or service, really. I didn’t start using it until we were under quarantine. But I don’t think I will ever go back to traditional grocery shopping.

As mom business owners, our home life and work-life are so intertwined. So anything we can do to alleviate stress or save time in either arena is helpful. I love that these apps save my previous purchases so I can easily order items I have in the past. I love that I don’t get distracted browsing the aisles. And I love that I can be spending time with my boys or working with clients while someone else gathers my goodies. I know I was late to the grocery delivery or click-and-pick-up game, but if you are looking to save time you should definitely try it.

  • Evernote – Next is Evernote. I think of Evernote as the corkboard of apps. It’s a great way to collect all those snippets, lists, ideas that pop into your head, or articles you see on the internet. Then you can easily refer back to them when you want to. And I love that you can use it on your computer AND your phone.

One way I use this to save time is by writing my captions for Instagram on Evernote. Then I copy and past them on my post on my phone. I can bust out a caption much quicker on my laptop and even copy-paste snippets of blog posts or emails I’ve written more easily. I can bank the captions for the posts I am planning for the week. That way I ready to post easily throughout the week.

  • Scheduling Instagram Stories – And speaking of posting to Instagram, Jen’s first question was about apps to schedule Instagram stories. And the answer is “yes”. And “no”. Yes, there are apps that allow you to plan your stories content. And decide when it would be best to schedule. And the no is that nearly all platforms will post your stories directly. Most operate by allowing you to create the content through their app. Then they’ll send you a notification when it’s time to post.

I personally have tried both Planoly and Tailwind for scheduling stories. I found that when I received my posting notifications, I was still tweaking and posting them myself. So I didn’t feel like it actually saved me much time. But if the idea of batching a weeks worth of content and scheduling notifications to remind you when to post helps you stay consistent, serve your community, and grow your business without adding unnecessary steps to your marketing plan. 100% do it.

Business Emergency Plans

Our next question is from Stephanie @mammahustle asks…

“What do you do when you are dealing with a family crisis but also need to work on your business?”

This question is so good and so timely. Like, how many of us have dealt with some sort of family crisis this year…Whether it’s someone in your house gets sick. Or your kids are suddenly home for school. Or someone in your extended family has an emergency. And these crises or emergencies are always looming. How can you possibly prepare for them?

Creating a plan to work on your business when there is a family crisis boils down to 3 steps.

  1. Know your priorities…What absolutely must be completed because it is time-sensitive or consequential.
  2. Eliminate unnecessary tasks…If it will not have immediate and devasting effects on your business, let it go until you can resume full effort.
  3. Delegate…Are there tasks you can delegate out for the time that need to go away? Are there household tasks like cooking or cleaning you can hire out to give you time to work so you can then tend to the crisis?

And if your emergency requires you to drop everything for a bit of time, it will be ok. Dedicating your time and energy to the priority of tending to your family is better than spreading yourself too thin. The stress of juggling too many balls, especially during times of crisis, can have lasting impacts on your mental and physical health. It takes a bit of trust but believe your community and your clients will be ready when you return.

Battling Mom Guilt While Trying to Work

And finally, I have a question from Deena @iamconfidentlyme. Deena asks…

“How do you deal with mom guilt when you’re working all day and don’t have as much time to engage/play with your kid(s)?”

Thank you Deena for this question. And I am 100% sure you are not the only one dealing with mom guilt gremlins. Let me start by saying mom guilt is all in our heads. It is a product of something or someone somewhere telling us that in order to be a good mom we need to act a certain way or buy a certain thing or spend every waking minute in direct eye contact.

The truth is, there are lots of different mom styles producing lots of amazing kids out there. Some moms only see their kids for a few hours in the morning and evening, and they are great moms. Some moms stay home but need to maintain the house. So even though they are within close proximity to there child all day, every day they aren’t in constant contact. And they are great moms. Moms who take time for themselves are great moms. Moms who spend all day with their kids are great moms. There is no 100% effective great mom formula.

That said, I encourage you to explore the root of the guilt…Is it unrealistic expectations or false depictions of what “working mom life” looks like? Worry about how your decisions will impact your child’s future? Trying to be a mom of all trades but master of none? So often our worries and guilt are rooted in a story our mind is telling us about what a good mom looks like and that we are not doing it right.

The only true story is that all moms experience some form of guilt…whether it’s from working or spending time on themselves or letting a baby cry or having another child. When you find yourself struggling with this work guilt, get to the root of what makes you feel that way. Ask yourself what is it that I am doing that is causing me to feel guilty right now? Then follow up with does my child know I love them? Am I setting a good example? Do I make time for my child? If you can answer yes, tell that mom guilt “buh-bye”.

This is a huge discussion and I know I just barely scratched the surface with that but I dive super deep into how to teach your kids to entertain themselves and the mindset around teaching your kids the important life skill of independence in my Independent Skills for Independent Kids course.

As a Business Systems Strategist, Shannon helps busy women with service-based businesses create systems to automate the time-consuming tasks required to run a business so they can work more efficiently and have more time for what matters most!

As a podcaster, Shannon hosts “The More Than Capable Mompreneur” podcast which has been listed in the top 200 in two categories on Apple Podcasts. In her episodes, she shares tips, strategies and conducts interviews to help busy women be more productive and use the mom cracks of time to get things done so they can find a balance that works for them without the mom guilt, can invest in themselves, and grow their business without burning out.

Shannon lives in Maryland with her husband and 17 year old daughter who homeschooled for high school and graduated this past March. Now she’s a college student! They are a very faith-focused family so their goals allow them to stay focused and be successful without interfering with that. She loves coffee and red wine blends as well as doing puzzles…which has become her new hobby. Shannon continues to have a part-time job and she’s building my business on the side.

1. What do you do in your business and why did you choose it?

I help busy women, especially mompreneurs, create systems to manage tasks to save them time and boost their productivity. This allows them to build their business on their own terms and spend time where it matters most.

I started my business as a virtual assistant while working full-time. After a few years though, being a VA was not the space I wanted to be in anymore. I had completed training to become an Online Business Manager but that didn’t light me up either. So I was at a crossroad, trying to decide if I should just close down my business and go back to work for someone else.

I took a summer off and just enjoyed time with my daughter and worked with just two clients on retainer. I also invested in private coaching with one of my mentors which helped me identify my mission, vision and purpose. That was October 2018 and after continuing to work with this coach I decided to take a major step in February 2019…I burned the boat and ended all of my contracts and went back to work part-time to reduce the financial pressure we had started to feel.

It took a lot of self-investment and mindset work for me to get comfortable with making the pivot from being a virtual assistant to being a business operations strategist. Not to mention, it took a lot of faith to admit to myself that I needed to make the change. Once I realized my true passion was putting things in order for a specific outcome I was able to move forward. This allows me to control where I use my energy to get the best results and I enjoy helping others do the same. That’s why I love processes and integrating technology.

2. What is your greatest strength when it comes to running your business? 

My business is structured to support my family and not take me away from them. So it has boundaries and I do all I can to keep it that way.

3. What is the area of entrepreneurship where you could grow the most? 

I’m getting more comfortable asking for the sale. But this has always been a struggle for me. Letting go of that fear is the only way my business will grow.

4. If you were to start your business over today, what piece of advice or lesson learned would you emphasize to yourself? 

Be confident in my expertise and don’t negotiate my prices.

5. What is your best advice for balancing business and home life or creating intentional family time? 

Decide what is important and make your plans with that in mind. There is no such thing as work-life balance. It comes down to what is the priority at the moment which changes and arranging your affairs accordingly.

“Geez, Christy, are you so obsessed with me having fun?”

Because you NEED it. As one of my coaches pointed out a few months back, Fun is Fuel. It fills your cup and keeps you going. And gives you a break you need and deserve. It reminds you why you had your kids or why you like your spouse. Not to mention it just feels good. See why you need fun as a mom entrepreneur?

If you can commit to planning simple, engaging activities ahead of time and making that time a priority, you can reap the benefits of being a fun mom. And a fun spouse. And a fun entrepreneur.

You don’t have to wait until your reach a certain level of success. Or until you have more money. Or until your kids are older. You can start and need to start having fun NOW.

One thing I find with many of the moms in my community or when talking with friends is that we overcomplicate fun. Or we are worried that what we can do won’t be exciting or memorable enough so we just don’t do anything at all.

But on the flip side, there are times we plan an elaborate outing for your family only to have kids complain and ruin the experience for us.

Let’s bring it back to simple. Just focus on being with the ones we love. And ask them what they would like to do. Chances are it is simpler and easier to work into your busy schedule than what our mom brains think up.

5 Reasons You Need Fun as a Mom Entrepreneur

And making time for fun is so worth it…let’s dive into 5 ways having fun can benefit you as a mom and as a mom entrepreneur and then I’ll give you some simple strategies for planning more fun with your family.

  1. First, having fun improves your relationships. It helps you connect with those around you. Setting aside specific time with your family and friends will strengthen your relationships and create memories. This special time with your loved ones helps you to step away and refocus on the relationships that are valuable to you.
  2. Next, having fun releases dopamine into your system. It’s one of those feel-good hormones that improve your mood, helps you feel more satisfied, and lowers your cortisol levels. Lower cortisol means lower feelings of stress. So fun means less stress!
  3. And taking a break from stressful work tasks to have a bit of fun also gives your brain a chance to relax and recover. This recovery period is vital to keep you working productively. According to research in a 2013 article titled “Why Your Brain Needs More Downtime” featured Scientific American magazine “Downtime replenishes the brain’s stores of attention and motivation, encourages productivity and creativity, and is essential to both achieve our highest levels of performance and simply form stable memories in everyday life.” 
  4. Having fun also increases our energy levels. Those nasty stress hormones like cortisol lead us down the road to anxiety and depression. Which in turn make us feel lethargic and unmotivated. It’s a nasty cycle, really. But adding some fun and play into our regular routine lowers those stress hormones and boosts our energy by increasing those positive endorphins and the dopamine running around in our system.
  5. And finally making time for fun will help stave off the burnout that so many entrepreneurs feel. Many entrepreneurs are so passionate about what they do that they are consumed by it. Many are running solo when which means they wear a lot of hats and do a lot of different jobs. And many work from home, causing feeling of social isolation during long, lonely days. That passion, overwork, and isolation is a recipe for the burnout so many entrepreneurs face. But incorporating fun means you are interacting socially, whether with your family or friends. It means your are giving your brain a rest from all the work you are doing to make your company a success. And making time for fun means you can replenish your productivity and creativity for more effective workdays without feeling tapped out.

So scheduling a bit of fun helps to improve your relationships, lower your stress, work more productively when you do work, increase your energy levels, and keep burnout at bay. Sounds pretty good, right?

How Mom Entrepreneurs Can Find Time for Fun

And if you’re thinking, all those benefits sound great, Christy, but I literally cannot add anything more to my plate, I got you. Fun shouldn’t cause stress. Fun should be fun. This is why I’m going to share how you can easily incorporate fun into your schedule…

  1. Get it on the Schedule…Look at your schedule and see when you can schedule weekly time for your family. Friday nights? Sunday afternoons? Tuesday before bed? If you feel like there isn’t time to make the time, something has to give. Because as I’ve shown, fun is important to your survival as an entrepreneur. Make the time. Do it regularly.
  2. Keep it simple…Have a game night. Read a series of books aloud. Cook together. Watch movies together. Take a walk or bike ride. It doesn’t have to be elaborate and time-consuming to plan. Simple time together is effective in improving your relationships and reducing stress levels. So keep it simple, sister.
  3. Don’t Do It Alone…Just because you’re the mom, doesn’t mean you have to do all the planning yourself. Empower your kids by taking their suggestions. You might be surprised at what sorts of simple activities spark joy in them. Not to mention, if the kids pick the activity, they are much less likely to complain.

Your action step for today to make sure you start making time for fun as a mom entrepreneur is to plan a family activity for this week. Get it on the schedule, make it something simple, and consult your family for ideas about what you should do so you don’t have to plan it all yourself.

Family Fun Tip

One of the reasons I like to share these tips is to show you that planning fun activities to fill your cup doesn’t have to be time consuming or expensive. Memories can be made when you keep it simple, make the time, and get creative. And creativity is front and center in this week’s tip.

With many of us suffering through colder temperatures and winter weather, it seems like a good time to absorb a bit of culture from the comfort of our couch under a mound of blankets. That’s why I’m recommending you check out Google’s Arts and Culture app. You can tour over 2000 of the world’s greatest art collections, monuments, and natural history museums. From The Art Institute of Chicago to the Palace of Versailles, from a tour of the White House to the National Museum in New Delhi, you can find virtual tours and information on arts, science, culture and history.

You can either download the Google Arts & Culture app or just visit artsandculture.google.com. If your TV has screen-sharing capabilities, you can share your tour right to your TV so you aren’t all huddled around your phone or tablet. So now even if you’re stuck at home, you can see the world.

Meet CEO and Found of the tech start-up Cyphtr Ali Jones…

I met Ali when she invited me as guest on her Instagram series “Friday Night Live” and we hit it off. I was so excited to chat with her again and have her share her incredible and honest journey with you.

From Executive Producer Assistant on big-budget films to tech startup founder & CEO to marketing consultant, Ali Jones lives in Louisiana where she’s balancing raising her toddler, hosting her IGTV series Friday Night LIVE, and helping entrepreneurs leverage emotional intelligence into their social media marketing to genuinely connect to their ideal client and enjoy making content without the burnout.

Ali is a mom of a 4-year-old and a big furball. She’s been happily married for 5 years. 2020 was a tough year for Ali in more ways than one…her son tested for Oppositional Defiant Disorder which required the whole family to learn different parenting methods in tandem with anger management and Montessori techniques. This along with her husband’s job loss and Covid diagnosis made the end of 2020 very difficult.

Even with all of the drama that 2020 has brought, they are still an extremely happy family that loves to go hiking, biking, and always look forward to another day in this blessed life. They are grateful for their community support and learned to just love each other fiercely through it all.

1. What do you do in your business and why did you choose it? 

As a founder of a startup, I’m wearing all the hats while prepping to hire my team. I developed a platform that allows you to follow up with everyone you meet via email the moment you meet them. I wanted to start this company because I have a passion for connecting people. I’m am also a marketing consultant with a focus on emotional intelligence and social media branding. I create quarterly marketing plans in addition to leveling up my client’s social media profiles and content strategy. As far as why I became a consultant, I never planned on doing this work, but I was getting asked to consult for authors and speakers and really enjoyed working with people that had a message and motivation to impact others. Marketing is something that I’m always thinking about, learning more about, and can’t stop talking about.

2. What is your greatest strength when it comes to running your business? 

Willpower is my greatest business strength and the only reason I have made it as far as I have. There are many hurdles to starting your own business, and the only way I’m able to have made it over them is by convincing myself to keep trying no matter how many times I fell down before.

3. What is the area of entrepreneurship where you could grow the most? 

I need to continue my education on my personal and business finances so that I can better understand when I can delegate and scale.

4. If you were to start your business over today, what piece of advice or lesson learned would you emphasize to yourself? 

I wish I would’ve believed in my own potential sooner and stopped the whole “fake it till you make it” mantra. I wasted a year and a half on stage competing with other startups for the attention of investors in hopes of having the funds to hire developers because “only smart people that are good with math know how to code.” Eventually I gave developing a shot and was able to develop my platform in 4 months and ran over 100 successful demos without having to sell of portions of my company to investors.

5. What is your best advice for balancing business and home life or creating intentional family time? 

Balance comes after you find what’s most important to you. You can’t sacrifice the things that make you happy in hopes for a more successful tomorrow. Happiness is wanting what you have, and success is having what you want. If you give up the things that make you happy, then you’ll never want the things that you have tomorrow if you sacrificed the best part of your life today.
