Can you slow down to speed up your success? Is that even possible? Today we discuss how rest and relaxation can actually improve your productivity and success rate. More than a constant hustle, hustle, hustle vibe. It may feel counterintuitive to think rest, relaxation, or taking a break from your work can actually help you achieve more.

But a fulfilled, healthy, and well-rested mompreneur has more energy to work. She has better focus and creativity to generate new ideas or problem solve. And she has a greater appreciation for the work she does on a daily basis. Plus, she knows she can step away to nurture her relationships outside her business without worrying about falling behind. And she actually looks forward to serving through her business rather than dreading her work. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like the kind of mom entrepreneur I want to be.

The Key to Better Productivity & Success

When you create time for intentional rest as an entrepreneur, you are able give your brain a much needed break. These “brain breaks” improve your productivity because your brain is less fatigued. Rest breaks help boost your creativity because you refill your energy reserves, rather than tapping an empty tank. And rest helps to reduce stress…you know that “fight or flight” response your feel when you’re on a deadline, struggling to figure out what to do next, or worrying about if and when you’ll succeed? Rest activates your parasympathetic nervous system. This reduces the amount of stress hormones in your system that can directly impact your physical, mental and emotional health, and even your longevity. In a nutshell, rest helps keep you healthy, strong, and successful during your crazy entrepreneur life.

When you can find time in your day for short rest breaks and during your week for longer non-work related activities, you will reap the benefits of slowing down to speed up.

And you may be asking yourself “how is this even possible?” Doesn’t working more create better results? Don’t I just need to hustle until I find what works? Won’t someone take my place if I step away?

Your fears are quite common. It does feel really backwards to think not working is the key to working better and smarter. To completing more tasks. Or achieving greater success.

The Benefits of Rest

Here’s the thing…The well-rested mompreneur has a healthier mind and body. She experiences less stress and anxiety. And she copes better when stress and anxiety rear their ugly little heads. She is more creative because her well-rested brain is better at solving problems and producing solutions. And her productivity improves because her brain, like the other muscles in her body, works more efficiently and quickly when it has had time to recover. She can confidently step away from work at the end of the day and nurture the relationships with her family and friends without thinking “ugh, I just need to do one more thing and maybe that will be the key.”

Easy Rest Ideas for Better Productivity

Rest is so vital to your success as an entrepreneur. And if you’re thinking “I just don’t even know where to begin”, here are 4 easy ways you can incorporate daily rest into your routine:

  1. Take short breaks…First, whether you schedule them in or just step away when you feel the need, even a 5 or 10 minute break is beneficial. Take some deep breaths. Do a short meditation. Put laundry away, unload the dishwasher, or some other non-taxing activity that doesn’t require deep thought. Take a short walk. Find a way to change gears and give your brain a break for a bit. She’s been working hard. She deserves it.
  2. Create healthy habits…Habits are great for the brain because it doesn’t have to make a decision, therefore it’s like a mini-break for your brain. Healthy habits or routines could include making the same healthy smoothie for breakfast every morning. Or an after-lunch walk routine. Maybe a morning meditation habit or gratitude practice. Even a short 20 minute afternoon nap if you need it. These regular habits and routines give your brain the rest it needs to recharge for the important work you’re asking it to do during the day.
  3. Create a sleep routine…Sleep might just be the most important restful activity you can do. But I can totally relate to the mom who can’t settle her brain at night. When you develop a routine that tells your brain “It’s time to wind down and go to bed”, you’ll find it easier to fall and stay asleep. Your routine might include a skincare routine. Reading. Shutting off screens or turning the lights down. Taking a shower or bath. And my personal favorite…drifting off to the sounds of a soothing sleep story.
  4. Make time for fun…And Finally, fun is my preferred rest choice. It gives me a break from the grind. It helps me develop relationships with my family and friends. And fun is FUN! Don’t let all work and no play make mom a dull lady. Find a way to incorporate some sort of simple fun into every day. Dance to great music. Play board game. Take a bike ride. Watch a funny animal video. Make a new recipe. Keep it simple and keep it regular. Everyone’s fun is different but there’s no reason you can’t have fun every day.

In conclusion, your action step to start incorporating rest into your routine is to brainstorm ways you can incorporate the suggestions I gave you into your daily schedule. When can you take short breaks and what will you do? What healthy habits can you include in your daily routine that can offload some decision making but also increase your mindfulness? What would the elements of your sleep routine include or how can you improve your current bedtime ritual? And finally, what are the simple ways you can experience fun today, tomorrow, and every day?
