Let’s talk some positive takeaways from quarantine…

Today, we are talking positive lessons from the past year in quarantine. And I’m specifically calling them positive takeaways from “quarantine” and not “the pandemic” or “covid-19” because I realize the virus side of the last year is very serious. I am unfortunately all too aware of the loss of life and income caused over the past year. But I also know that one of the major takeaways for me personally, despite the losses, was finding gratitude regularly. In focusing on the abundance of what I have versus what I didn’t have or couldn’t have. It is a practice that I know helped keep my mood higher and my stress levels lower.

And I know that many in my community had some similar experiences. That’s why I reached out on Instagram and asked them to “Tell Me Something Good”. So I could share and inspire you to create your own quarantine positive practice to find the gratitude and abundance despite difficult times.

Positive Takeaways from Quarantine: Slow Down & Focus

Let’s start with @mcrae.designnc who says…”Together we can get through anything – together as a family, a community of moms and a group of friends. Also being “not busy” helped me to prioritize and find out what I’m good at instead of just hoping in the hamster wheel of production. I for sure finessed my product and my brand over the last year. ❤️

And @thejoyfulsort had a similar takeaway when she said her takeaway was “The chance to slooooow down and reprioritize”

Did anyone else realize how fast they were moving when the world forced them to slow down? I know I did. Especially in terms of taking “busy” off the table. And I also know that a goal as we start to resume a more regular pace of life is to keep some sense of those priorities. To keep the rat race from creeping back. To appreciate the slow. Anyone else?

Positive Takeaways from Quarantine: Business Is Better

Next, we have some business positives. I know between unemployment numbers and shutdowns, there is a lot of stress around business. And running small businesses. But these amazing mom entrepreneurs actually found their way to gratitude despite the difficulties.

@hellomigosocial commented “For me it was being part of a massive layoff and diving headfirst into launching my business. It hasn’t been easy, but I know that I’m in line with what I’m meant to do”

Talk about flipping the script! This abundant mama was able to spin her low point into creating a new life for her family that she loves.

@taramqwhitaker also found the time and confidence to make a change thanks to the past year. She says “I finally pivoted my business into what I *really* wanted to do but was too scared of doing before. It’s lit a fire in me, and I’m SO glad I took the plunge!”

This goes back into having that slow down we talked about earlier. The time to think a little longer. Or consider what would make you happier. Or lean into what scares you because what else do you have to do right now! Both of these mamas took a leap inspired by their time in quarantine that is already paying dividends for their business.

And speaking of investing during quarantine to pay dividends later, @queenbeejackie says “I think I had several positives of last year! The time at home allowed me to slow down and focus on building relationships in my personal and professional life. Learning to better communicate with others while not being face to face. I also made some meaningful connections with other business owners thru Instagram that have become supportive peers IRL. Very thankful!”

Another mama appreciative of slowing down, re-focusing, and finding ways to improve despite difficult circumstances. And I love how @queenbeejackie is already thinking about how she can transfer the communication skills she has honed over the past year to create a supportive community in real life going forward.

Positive Takeaways from Quarantine: Personal Triumphs

Next, we had some mamas share more personal wins…@christenjschneider “Letting people help me has probably been my biggest lesson/positive this year.”

I found this comment so relatable. I fully admit that I am a mom who struggles with asking for help even if I know I need it. And when the universe dumped on us mom last spring, our already difficult job got even harder. I applaud all of you who realized you could no longer juggle it all without help. And I hope like @christenjschneider shared, that it wasn’t a temporary fix. That we have learned to ask for help in our home and business life when we need it in order to keep our minds and moods in a safe stress zone.

And finally, @aliciamc25 shared “I used exercise as a means of dealing with my stress and I’m feeling pretty f-ing awesome. And can do a V sit! (My abdominal strength was destroyed after baby #4 so the V sit is a huge f-ing accomplishment for me!)”

You! Go! Girl! You should feel incredibly accomplished and I love so much about this share. First, she knew she needed some sort of stress release and leaned into exercise. That recognition and taking action is so crucial and necessary to maintain and healthy mind and attitude. And secondly, you should scream your accomplishments from the rooftops! Whether you can now do a v-sit after 4 kids, or you signed your first client, or you made your first six-figures. You should absolutely celebrate your wins. Shout them loudly and often just like @aliciamc25 did here. Regular celebrations of even the smallest victories are so important for your motivation and mental health.

Lastly today, I want to share a few of my personal positives from the past year. I am incredibly grateful for the extra time with my kids. Has it all been fun? No. Have we had stressful times? Yes. But in 10 years when my kids are gone, I will think back fondly on the year when we ate every single meal together for 380 some odd days straight. On how we used creativity to stay entertained. On how bad I am at teaching 3rd grade math. I honestly think when my kids go back to in-person school next fall, it will be harder on my mama heart than it was when I dropped them off for kindergarten.

And finally, much like @hellomigosocial and @taramqwhitaker, 2020 forced me to lean into an idea I was merely toying with when it came to my business. Because I couldn’t work outside the home as a professional organizer, I had the time, drive and brainspace to cultivate something I am passionate about.

One of my favorite quotes is “leap and your net will appear” from John Burroughs. But without the forced slow down, I may never have taken the time to leap. And for that I am grateful. Grateful for the coaching I have received around launching my coaching business. Grateful for the opportunity to create content around my passion of helping mom entrepreneurs experience a super fun life. And grateful for you listeners in over 40 countries around the world who take time out to listen each week. I hope I’ve helped you with some quick wins and strategies to make both your home and work life more fun and fulfilled.

Now it’s your turn…For this final action step of season 2, get out a pen and paper or the notes app on your phone. Reflect on the positives you’ve experienced in the last year, despite all the other circumstances. Once you start focusing on what your positives, you’ll start to see the abundance all around you.

Family Fun Tip

Our final super simple family fun tip for season 2 is to make a bird feeder. I have my year as a homeschool mom to thank for the inspiration for this tip. Both last Spring and this past Fall, my kids’ science lessons included that construction of some sort of bird feeder. And I have to say, I’m kinda of surprised at how much enjoyment we’ve got from a pretty simple task.

Last spring, we made super simple, pinecones covered in bird seed feeders. Which were promptly stolen from our tree right in front of our eyes by a pair of very stealthy squirrels. It was quite entertaining watching them try to run away and up a tree with their prize.

In the Fall, I made an effort to outsmart the squirrels with simple kits from Amazon, which I will link to in the show notes for you. We painted our houses and filled them religiously throughout the winter. Many mornings, we would open our front door to see cardinals, chickadees, house finches, and tufted titmouses enjoying their buffet. Like I said, a shockingly satisfying craft.

Accountability: How You Benefit and Why It’s Important

I’m so happy you are joining me today to talk (cue ominous music)…accountability.

I’m hoping after today to assuage any fears or angst that you might have around the word accountability. And that you’ll see accountability can be an effective and essential tool in your success as an entrepreneur. And in so many other aspects of your life.

That is the great thing about accountability. It helps you make things happen. I had a big accountability “a-ha” moment several years back. I had been trying to lose weight for many years. So my husband and I decided to try Weight Watchers when they introduced their online program and app. There was something about the reminders to log my food and knowing whatever I put in my mouth was recorded. It made me way more successful than I had ever been on my own. For so many years, I had this idea that if I reached out for support meant that I was weak. Or the success wouldn’t mean as much if you didn’t do it all along.

I am grateful my Weight Watchers adventure started my accountability journey that I confirmed when reading the book “The Four Tendencies” by Gretchen Rubin. If you aren’t familiar, The Four Tendencies are a personality framework that breaks down your response to inner and outer expectations. In a nutshell, some people are great with setting their own expectations. Some do better when they know others are expecting them to do something. In other words, internally versus externally motivated.

When I took the The Four Tendencies quiz, which you can take by clicking here, I discovered I was what she calls an “Obliger”. This means I respond best to outer expectations and motivation but struggle with my own personal expectations for myself. It was like a light bulb went off. My need for outside accountability didn’t mean I was broken. It just meant that I responded best when I knew someone would be expecting something from me. And ever since then, I have been looking for ways I can incorporate outside accountability. This helps me reach both business and personal goals.

The Benefits of Accountability

When you commit to an accountability partner, whether it is a friend, family member, or paid coach, you create a team around the expectation of your success. Now, there are other people routing for you. Supporting you. Making sure you are hitting milestones. Cheering your success. And picking you up when things don’t go so well.

Can you find that person or people that align with the goals you set? Commit to showing up for your check-ins and doing the work between? Then you too can see massive success from finding an accountability partner.

Ever find yourself wondering why you just can’t get past a certain level? Or feeling frustrated that you know you NEED to do X, Y, and Z, but you put it off. Or just don’t do it. Even if you know it could bring you the success you want in your business or personal life.

You may be struggling to keep up on your own. Or you’ve kept your goals and dreams a secret from your friends and family. You know, just in case you didn’t hit those milestones. Maybe you thought, like me, if you didn’t achieve your success on your own without outside help that it just wasn’t as sweet.

But I’ll tell you what is sweet…research shows that having a specific accountability partner to help you reach your goals improves your success rate to 95%. That sounds pretty sweet to me. Over time, your accountability partner can help you reframe your “failures” as growth points.   

They keep you motivated, moving forward and on track by meeting for regularly scheduled check-ins and progress updates. And their outside perspective can help you prioritize your task list better. Because their heart isn’t as close to your goal as you. I mean, I’ve had some tough love with coaches who told me to modify certain plans because they didn’t align with my goals. And they were right…but I couldn’t see it because my passion was to close to my ideas.

And when you start to succeed more, feel more confident and less stressed, everyone around you will feel it. You can show up for your family less anxious. Share your financial success with family and friends. Finally feel confidant to take those family pictures or go to the pool with your kids this summer. Finding accountability to get you to your goals is so worth it!

Finding Your Accountability Partner

Ready to start to wading into the pool of potential accountability buddies? Consider a few things so you can have a successful experience…

  1. Does the person you want to work with have experience in the area where you need support? Just because someone is an amazing business owner, doesn’t mean they can help you lose weight. Find someone with real life, successful experience in what you want to accomplish.
  2. Are they too close to you that their feedback could be taken personally or affect your relationship? Remember, part of accountability is being open for feedback and change. If you choose your spouse or best friend, will their honest feedback leave you feeling resentful? If so, maybe look for someone a little less familiar.
  3. Are they dependable? Make sure your buddy is the person that shows up for lunch dates that were on the schedule…not the buddy that texts when they are 5 minutes late that they aren’t going to make it. Both buddies are perfectly fine on a social level…but when it comes to accountability, you want the person that shows up on time and ready to go.

Family Fun Tip

This week, we are talking scavenger hunts. Am I showing my age if I say that Polaroid Picture Scavenger Hunts are one of my favorite memories from high school? You know, where you’d have to snap a polaroid of everyone on your team “Building a Pyramid on the Football Field” or “Crammed Into a Phone Booth”. Ok, if the mention of Polaroid didn’t date me, the idea of phone booths might have. But you get the idea. Divide into teams. Find the items on your list. Race back to the assigned end point.

And lucky for us moms, there are a lot of other moms who make scavenger hunting for our families much easier. I found a fantastic post from My Joy Filled Life with 75 different scavenger hunt ideas for you and your family. From nature walks to the library to birds or letters or things at the grocery store. And, of course, one of the most popular hunts of the spring season is often an Easter Egg Hunt, which you can also turn into a clue-based scavenger hunt if you would like. Lots of different options to get your family out and about. Solving clues and looking for items to cross off their hunt list.

And one of the major issues my Family Fun Bucket List solves for the families in my community is accountability. When you sit down for your monthly family meeting and family members share and schedule their ideas, there is a sense of expectation set. You can bet dollars to donuts if my 9-year-old says he wants to go on a Family PokemonGo walk in the park and we schedule it, he will make sure we remember and make it happen.

What do you do in your business and why did you choose it? 

I’m an Instagram Coach. I chose this because when I worked at The Estee Lauder Companies I was in Project Management. When I started an IG account for our department, I fell in love with social media marketing. I was able to quickly gain attention within the company. Later, I was asked to be the Global Social Media Lead for the Estee Lauder Companies’ Women’s Leadership Network, Women in Supply Chain + Women in Technology.

2. What is your greatest strength when it comes to running your business? 

Building a strong community through genuine community management. Noticing and bringing out the best in my clients when it comes to showing up online. And providing efficient strategies to growing your brand on Instagram.

You Don’t Need Luck. You Need a Plan.

With tomorrow being St. Patrick’s Day I wanted to talk a little bit about luck. Well, actually, why you need a plan. The idea for this episode popped into my head recently when I dropped some food off for a friend who was ill. She asked how things were going with working from home and homeschooling the kids. I honestly answered her that they were going well. My boys were thriving with more one-on-one attention in their schoolwork and we had really found a good routine to juggle work and school. Her response was “well, you’re lucky. So many people aren’t as lucky as you.”

I didn’t think much about it until I was driving home. It dawned on me I’m not lucky. Luck implies that I wasn’t involved with the success I was experiencing. The fact is, I made my success. I work hard for this. I wake up early nearly every morning to maintain this. It isn’t LUCK that’s helped me maintain a positive attitude and find success in my juggle struggle. It’s a good plan. And we’re going to talk about why you need a plan to on today’s episode.

Taking the time to create a plan for your day, your week, and your quarter when it comes to your business help you know exactly what you need to work on when. I don’t know about you, but with all the balls I have in the air, decision fatigue is a regular occurrence. And I work much better when I don’t have to decide, I just have to do.

If you can set aside time on a regular basis to create tasks based on your current goals then schedule times to work on those specific tasks, you will not only see more progress on your goals. You will start to make better use of your time and eliminate tasks that waste your time or are not aligned with your goals.

Up until now, you might have been doing all the things…you do what this guru over there says. And then you’re sprinkling in what you learned from a workshop here. Plua a dash of what’s working for someone you saw on Instagram there.

Why You Need a Plan

I’ve been where you are. It’s kinda maddening really. You feel like you are working so hard and doing so much but NOTHING seems to be yielding the results you feel like you deserve from your efforts. But the fact is, the random tasks you are doing aren’t aligned with your goals directly. Your social media posts, YouTube videos, and email newsletters are just happening without a direct purpose related to the financial and community-building goals your set.

When you take time to create a plan, you focus on the tasks that actually move the needle and align with your goals. And in turn, you see the results in your community growth and your bank account.

Not to mention, you will know what you need to work on when you sit down every day rather than recreating the wheel on a regular basis. And you’ll make better use of that time you put it because it is going towards an aligned task. And all those spaghetti throwing tasks you were doing before because “someone” told you to do it. They can hit the road. No more wasted work time.

And you aren’t the only one who benefits from a solid plan…when you can make more of the time you work, you can work less. Less work means more time for the ones you love. When the tasks you focus on yield results because they are aligned, you are less stressed and able to stay present when you are with your family, with your spouse or with your friends. That in turn will help you relax and refresh so you can show up better for the work you do during your work how. See how nicely a plan fits into a healthy work cycle?

Where to Start When You Need a Plan

So where do you even start when it comes to creating a quarterly, weekly, or even daily plan? Start with your goals. How many new clients would you like to get this month or quarter? What would you like to sell more of from your shop? How many courses do you need to sell to reach your goal?

Once you know what you would like to do, think about how you will do it. What works best for you? Do you sell best in person? On social media? Through email? Look at your past success and brainstorm how you can continue to build on those accomplishments. You don’t need to add something new…look at expanding what you already do.

And as you create a list of the tasks that brought you previous success and how you can expand on that, those ideas are what will become your focused tasks on your daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly schedule. Those are the thing you MUST do consistently and regularly. You can let go of the other stuff or put them on the backburner. But remember, when you lean into what is working, you can work less and yield better results.

Set your goals. Brainstorm the steps it takes to reach those goals. Schedule those steps as your daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. Anything else you have time to do is just gravy. But for now, focus on the tasks that make an impact.  

Remember, taking time to create a plan helps you know what to do when. Your plan creates a task list aligned with your goals. With actions that move the needle on selling more and growing your community. And by creating a plan you will be able to make better use of your work time while eliminating actions that don’t align with your goals or may be wasting your precious time.

Family Fun Tip

The first day of Spring or the Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere is this Saturday, March 20th. I wanted to give you some simple ways you could celebrate the season of rebirth and renewal with your family. Because we could all use a little renewal right now…am I right?

You could:

  • Take a hike on a new or favorite trail.
  • Start some seeds for a kitchen garden or backyard flower garden.
  • Search out some YouTube videos on the seasons to see how the rotation of the Earth around the sun affects the hemispheres differently and what the heck an equinox even is.
  • Visit your local library for books on the life cycle of flowers and plants, baby animals, or Spring in general.
  • Take some time to be present outside. Enjoy the thaw. Enjoy the pre-mosquito outdoors with your family and without your phone. Just be. Outside.

I met Stefanie Oseni-Momodu via Instagram when I was researching mindset for my own personal development. I was inspired by her message for mom entrepreneurs. And her smile. 😊

Stefanie started Stefanie Gabriella Coaching for ambitious, busy mums out there who are ready to stop living on autopilot and start taking action towards their dreams. And reach their goals without the feeling of guilt. To rediscover themselves after becoming a mum, and start dreaming big again. Her mission is to reach that mum who feels overwhelmed with the multiple roles she is juggling. And yet feels isolated. She has lost who she was and struggling to determine who she is besides a mum.

As a Mindset Coach, Stefanie uses different tools and techniques to get down to the bottom of what is really holding back her clients from achieving what they really want to achieve for themselves and their business.

Before becoming a certified coach, Stefanie spent just over 10 years in the finance sector, she is a part-qualified Accountant, with an MSc in International Financial Management and a BSc in Accounting with Finance. Though she maintained a successful career in Finance, she always knew her passion was to help people achieve their dreams and help them see the best version of themselves. She loves investing herself in the growth of people that crosses her path where possible.

When she’s not coaching mums to be their best selves at home and at work, Stefanie enjoys spending time with her family and traveling. How to Determine Your Impact Driven Tasks

What the heck am I even talking about? Impact driven tasks? Well, knowing and focusing your energy on your Impact Driven Tasks (aka IDTs) will make the most of the time and effort you put into working on and in your business. It will help you know what to work on when. It will help you determine what you can let go of. And it will help you work less.

Entrepreneurs who recognize and focus on the tasks that will make an impact on their bottom line, grow their community, or create more buzz around their zone of genius will reap the benefits of impact driven tasks. And it’s not just recognizing your IDTs but making them a priority. These are the tasks that you tackle first on your daily to-do list, no matter how much you hate them.

Why Impact Driven Tasks?

Focusing on IDTs is like super-charging your to-do list. Sure, you may have a long list of things you think you need to do. Maybe someone somewhere at some time told you you need to be doing for your business. But do those tasks actually make an impact on your business?

And if you’re thinking “why would I want to add any more to my to-do list. I’m getting results so why would I want to spend more time analyzing and planning.”

Because it means that every effort you make will have a greater effect. It means that you’ll earn a great ROI for the time dollars you invest in growing your business. Not to mention you’ll make more actual dollars in your bank account.

Gone will be the days of trying to figure out what to do first because you will know that those Impact Driven Tasks for the day MUST come first because those are the tasks that will make you money, grow you community, and establish your authority.

And your new found focus can help you to work less but grow more. Meaning more time for the people you love and money to spend doing the things you love with them.

How to Determine Your Impact Driven Tasks

I can hear you out there saying “sign me up. Help me figure out my IDTs!” And that is exactly what we are going to do right now. And it’s so simple yet so effective.

When you make your list of what you will do for your business today or this week, here is how to determine if you task is an Impact Driven Task…

  1. Does it make you money? Any tasks that are directly in line with the money-making parts of your business is an IDT. Because it makes you money…which is the point of your business. For example, sending an email to your community. Creating a sales page. Making an Instagram story about a product you sell…these are all impact driven tasks. Because they can make you money.
  2. Does it help you build your community? It’s kind of hard to sell what you do if you don’t have anyone to talk to. That’s why building your community is so important and impact driven. For instance, you could recording a podcast interview for an aligned podcast. Or asking an answering questions during a FB live. Or reaching out to your community on Instagram through Dms just to say “hi” and “welcome”. Because the action is bringing people in and nurturing them, it is impact driven.
  3. Does it establish your expertise? People want to buy from qualified experts. So when you aren’t spending time directly soliciting sales or nurturing those in your community, you need to focus on actions that make you the go-to person in your field. Actions like writing a blog post or article for online publication. Recording your own podcast addressing topics in your field of expertise. Or writing thoughtful social media posts with valuable information aligned with your zone of genius. If I can read your blog post, hear your podcast, or see your social media post and think “that mama knows what she is talking about”, that is an impact driven task.

When your daily to-do list start with impact driven tasks, you will spend time moving forward and growing your business versus spinning your wheels. Impact driven tasks are the ‘”why” behind every business.

Why you do what you do…to make money, to build a community and to become an expert in your field. When you look at what you will do today, ask yourself “Will this task make me money? Will it build my community” Will it showcase my expertise?” When you can answer “yes” to one of those questions, do that task first. Every. Single. Day.

When you focus your time, energy, and effort on your IDTs, you will see greater growth, more sales, and find you can let other less impactful tasks go…freeing up that time and energy for your family and yourself.

Who wants to have a “YES Day”? If you aren’t familiar with the book Yes Day by Amy Rosenthal-Krause and Tom Lichtenheld. Or if you’re not following Jennifer Garner on IG, you might be wondering what “Yes Day” is. In a nutshell, it is a day where you say “yes” to the requests of your kids.

Cake for breakfast? Yes.

Building a pillow fort in the living room? Yes.

That messy science experiment they’ve been begging you to do? Yes.

They can ask for what they want, within the boundaries you establish, and the answer is “yes” for that day. “Yes Day” isn’t about telling your kids it’s ok to break rules (that’s why you establish clear boundaries ahead of time). Or telling them eating candy 3 meals a day is ok. It’s about spending time doing what THEY choose. Empowering their decisions and ideas.

If a “Yes Day” sounds fun to you, hears how you prepare…pick a day that is not a school day or a day without regularly scheduled activities. You’ll also want to establish your boundaries…how far you will travel, if at all. How much money you will spend. No activities that are harmful to anyone or destructive to property. You can even solicit some requests in advance so you can prepare any food, crafts, or other activities your kids have in mind. Remember, this isn’t about last minute trips to Disney or buying a Playstation 5. It’s about empowering your kid, just for a day.

6 Ways Running Your Business is Like Baking Sourdough

How in the world is running your business like baking sourdough bread???

You might have gathered that I am a fan of baking. If you follow me on Instagram, you may know that I have a quarantine sourdough starter named Fred. Yes, I jumped on the sourdough bandwagon. And no I’m not ashamed. When I was baking a loaf of bread a few weeks back, I realized that Fred is coming up on his one-year birthday. And I thought back to how many crappy loaves of sourdough my family has suffered through in the past year while I was finding my groove. That is why on this episode we are going to discuss how running your business is like baking sourdough.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that many of the lessons and take aways I have from a year of baking sourdough bread almost weekly can also be applied to starting and growing a business. So I’m going to share six business lessons I’ve learned from baking sourdough bread.

Nuture It At the Beginning

First, you have to nurture your starter at the beginning. When you first create your sourdough starter, you have to spend time nearly every day feeding and nurturing it. It needs flour, fresh water, and a warm place to grow on a daily basis in order to become strong enough to use in a loaf of bread.

The same is true in your business…you have to put a lot of time in at the beginning. You have to give it exactly what it needs at the beginning. This helps the starter get stronger and work for you. You have to spend the time nurturing it and creating a solid base so it can work for you.

Let Parts Go

Another thing you will learn with your sourdough starter is that you need to let some of it go. Unless you are a full-fledged bakery capable of baking dozens of loaves a day, you need to discard some of your starter. This helps it to stay healthy and strong. You might give it to friends or neighbors. But most of the time you just need to toss it in order for the remaining starter to stay strong. The stronger your starter, the better your bread will be.

The same is true of your business. It can be so easy to hold on to all the different places you are marketing or products you are selling because you hate to waste the time you’ve put into developing them. But…your business will be much stronger if you can scale back. If you focus energy on the best of what you do and where you show up.

Plan in Advance

When you finally start baking sourdough bread, you learn you have to plan in advance. Unlike yeast breads, sourdough takes an extended period of time to rise…typically 12-18 hours and sometimes longer. That means, if you want to eat soup and sourdough for dinner tonight, you’re SOL. You have to plan ahead. You have to make time for the steps a day in advance of when you would like to eat it.

The same is true of your business…sure there are certain parts you can slapdash and get done. Want the true, artisan-style sourdough boule experience for your customers? Put some effort and energy into planning ahead. You “knead” to how your plan is going to fit into your marketing and revenue goals. Plan ahead, then enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Learn from Failures

Even the best-laid plans are not successful. And the next lesson from sourdough that you can apply to your business is to learn from your failures. If you try to bake sourdough once, chances are you will not succeed on the first try. There are so many intricacies and variables in sourdough bread. Starters are temperamental and need to be well nurtured to work properly, you’re inexperienced at kneading and shaping your loaf, you forget to add the salt. My loaves have fallen victim to all of these. But I was determined to learn from what I did wrong and try again. Because I believed in the process and I knew it was something I wanted to do.

Bring that passion and drive to your business. If it doesn’t work out right the first time, you can always try again. Most of the time when you see another entrepreneur’s success, it’s because you didn’t see the 20 times they didn’t succeed and went back to the drawing board.

Consult with Experts

Another way you can learn from your failures to succeed is to consult with experts. The number of YouTube videos I have watched on sourdough breadmaking is rivaled only by the number of YouTube videos I have watched on marketing your business. Each time I struggle with a certain aspect of my breadmaking, I search for a video on “how to knead bread” or “why is my sourdough so pale” or “why won’t my sourdough rise when baking”.

And when you are struggling with an aspect of your business that you don’t understand, there are experts out there that can either teach you to do it, or, better yet, do it for you so you don’t have to waste time and energy on something that isn’t in your zone of genius.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

And finally, remember that looks can be deceiving. I have made several terrible looking loaves that tasted just fine despite being an ugly beige carpet color. And on the flip side, I’ve made beautiful loaves that tasted terrible. I mean, there are only 4 ingredients in sourdough…how hard can it be to forget salt and yet, I’ve done it no less than 3 times.

The same can be true when you look at the businesses around you. Whether it’s on social media, in your mastermind, or just what you research on the internet…you see that they want you to see. You may feel your business looks like a hot mess. But what’s on the outside doesn’t matter if you’re helping your ideal client with wins. And that business you’re jealous of on IG may look amazing on the outside while suffering behind the scenes. Don’t hold yourself back because your loaf is ugly…if it tastes good people will want it. And you can always get better the next bake (remember, when we don’t succeed, we learn.)

In conclusion, your business like baking sourdough because you have to nurture it up front. Then it can be strong and work well for you. You have to let parts go so that the main focus can be strong. You need to plan in advance. And learn from your failures and consult experts when you have questions or need help. Finally, remember looks can be deceiving. Just keep focusing on what you are doing and creating the best product you can. Eventually, you will find your rhythm and your tribe.

Family Fun Tip

For today’s Family Fun tip, I want to butter you up because as you’ve learned, you “knead” fun in order to run a successful business. I personally love baking with my boys. Mostly because it is a chance for me to share something I love with them. Even if they don’t grow up to be pastry chefs, I am hoping they will have fond memories of baking sugar cookies during the holidays or birthday cakes with me. Or at least they’ll have fond memories of eating what we made.

So many kitchen skills are about familiarity and comfort in the kitchen so regularly cooking and baking with your kids can help them start to understand how ingredients go together while developing confidence in the kitchen. Some ideas creating treats together might be…making no-bake treats like no-bake cookies or rice cereal treats, having a bake-off to see who can bake the best tasting treat, testing several different recipes for favorites like chocolate chip cookies to decide which is best, or researching a baked good from your family history and baking it together.

Whatever it is that you choose, baking is a very simple, easy, and delicious way for you to create some family fun while teaching life skills and kitchen confidence.
